Gabrielle Roy - A literary icon hailing from St. Boniface

January 5th, 2010

If you're an avid French Canadian novel reader, you are probably very familiar with a St. Boniface-born author by the name of Gabrielle Roy. And chances are, you are a carrying a quote by her in your wallet. On every $20 Canadian bill, her words Nous connaîtrions-nous seulement un peu nous-mêmes, sans les arts? in small font are stamped. I grew up a few blocks away from where she grew up as a child (but 7 decades before my time!) in the quaint neighbourhood of St. Boniface, the heart of the francophone community here in Winnipeg.

As a high school student, I read her novels and even produced a short documentary on her, who by many has been considered one of the most influential Canadian authors. The house where she grew up in has since been converted into a museum in her honour and this year marks the 100th anniversary of her birth. In honour of her outstanding contribution to Canadian literature and as a celebration of our local "celebrity",  Lise Gaboury-Diallo has put together a book which is a beautiful collection of texts and artwork by Franco-Manitoban artists. Prior to this, a fundraising auction for the Gabrielle Roy Museum was held at la Maison des artistes and the artwork from the auction have been included in this book.

As a Franco-Manitoban artist and collaborator to the art auction and book, I'm very excited to share with you Sillons : hommage à Gabrielle Roy. It is with pride and pleasure that I have, in some small way, contributed to the celebration and honouring of one of Canada's greatest writers. Check it out!

Winter in Winnipeg

January 3rd, 2010

It was one of those mornings when I was looking forward to going to Stella's for a good latté and meeting up with a good friend... I started my day lazily, taking my time to get ready, until I took a peek outside the window and changed plans. Hoarfrost! I grabbed my camera and with 10 minutes to spare, stopped at a park on my way to Osborne Village. I wished I could have stayed longer, but after 10 minutes, the latté was beckoning me. With these winter gems safely in my memory card, I headed off to enjoy a great visit with my friend. As a freelance photographer, having the liberty to come and go, do fun shoots on the whim and make detours is such an added bonus to this already amazing job. There's nothing like it! I really love these pictures - some of these backgrounds look like textured paintings - what photography can create from nature is absolutely stunning! I never cease to be amazed by light, texture, colour and shapes. I do have the best job in the world! I can't get enough of taking pictures!

Courtney & Cole {Engagement Photography Winnipeg}

January 1st, 2010

Happy New Year everyone! I can't believe how fast 2009 has gone, but at the same time it's been an eventful year! It's been such a wonderful experience to meet so many new people - couples who are celebrating the beginning of their new lives together, families who are welcoming new arrivals, artists and musicians who are pursuing their passions and other photographers who have inspired and encouraged me. I'm looking forward to the coming months where new and exciting changes are coming: including a new (and absolutely gorgeous) studio space I will now be renting in the Exchange District. More details on that soon.... you don't want to miss this!

Today I just finished editing a lovely engagement photo shoot with Courtney & Cole - a delightful couple from Lloydminster, Saskatchewan that I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time on Tuesday. They drove in (braving the crazy winter prairie highways) all the way to Winnipeg during the Christmas holidays, and it was great to finally put faces to the names! We had "met" over the phone a few months ago, and after our conversations, I just knew they were going to be a fun, easy-going pair. They're the type of people who you can sit down for coffee with and talk for hours about everything and nothing. It was great to see their colourful personalities and love for each other coming through even in front of a camera - they were naturals!

Although we're starting to experience the deep freeze here in Winnipeg, that didn't stop us from taking some fun photos outside too. Thanks you two for braving the cold for some lovely shots! You guys look adorable and I can't wait for the wedding!
